Prime Cut

Prime Cut is pretty much the introduction to almost anything you want to do on the Book Cliffs side of Fruita. There are other trails that you can ride from the parking lot to the base of the cliffs, but many of them wind through the campground or are little more than dirt roads which takes away from some of the scenic beauty that is almost unavoidable in this area. This trail skirts a desert wash and crosses it many times.

This trail, like all of the trails in Fruita, are to be avoided when wet. On the ride we did here in October of 2002, Julian and I were racing a rain storm to make it back to the car. The trails firmed up and were great for riding by the next morning.

Riding Prime Cut is one of the better warm-ups you can get in the area. It starts with a very gradual incline and gets a little steeper as the 2.2 miles of trail winds towards the cliffs. It is never by any means a steep climb.
